Event Date: August 14, 2001

Professor Leslie Geddes, the Showalter Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Biomedical Engineering, has been awarded The Lee de Forest Award by the Radio Club of America. The Radio Club of America is a New York-based society of wireless communications engineers, executives, managers and specialists, broadcasters, university faculty, military communications specialists and radio amateurs. Formed by a small group of dedicated radio amateurs and experimenters in 1909, The Radio Club of America would soon count among its membership the very best in the Radio Communications Industry: Edwin Armstrong, David Sarnoff, Louis Hazeltine, John V. L. Hogan, Paul Godley and Allen B. DuMont, to name just a few. These were pioneers who would shape the industry.

The de Forest Award is named after Lee de Forest (1873-1961), who is most known for his contributions and improvements to the basic vacuum tube. Initiated in 1983, the award is presented by the Board of Directors to a person for significant contributions to the advancement of radio communications. This award has been presented ten times since 1983.
