Research Summary:

Our main research interests lie in surface functionalization of technologically important semiconducting materials such as silicon, porous and amorphous silicon and gallium arsenide, for instance. Through passivation and incorporation of sophisticated chemical functionalities, we are able to dramatically stabilize the surfaces with respect to oxidation and aging, and to modify the electronic properties of the bulk semiconductor. In contrast to the majority of surface functionalization strategies, we use very mild and efficient catalytic reactions with little thermal input (room temperature) and simple, readily available reactants. We have recently developed a photopatterning methodology for silicon surfaces which allows for spatially defined arrays of chemical functionalities or lithography, crucial for sensor and optoelectronic applications.
