Research Summary:

Professor Viskanta teaches at the undergraduate and graduate levels in the area of heat transfer and conducts research in thermal sciences, heat, mass and radiative transfer. His current research interests include heat transfer in combustion systems, melting and solidification of materials, buoyancy driven convection flow and heat transfer, heat transfer related to materials processing and radiative transfer in participating media. Most of Professor Viskanta's research has been carried out jointly with students. He has guided the work of over 60 doctoral and over 45 master candidates and has authored more than 500 refereed technical and scientific papers published in archival journals and in proceedings and symposia volumes. He has also prepared numerous invited state-of-the-art reviews in the areas of his expertise. He has presented over 20 invited keynote lectures at national and international conferences and symposia and over 130 seminars at universities and research institutions in the United States and around the world. In 1987 he was elected member of the National Academy of Engineering.
