ECNNEWS: Online Announcements

Marian Hensler

This summer the ECN will be placing on line an announcement service, "ecnnews". Currently when you login the motd, message of the day, appears informing system users of beneficial information. This news covers such diverse topics as network news, job offerings, scholarship and grant deadlines, seminars being offered and ECN updates.

The motd will continue to be part of your daily computer life; however, life is going to be made a bit easier with the creation of ecnnews. Previously all files containing the more detailed information mentioned in the motd were kept on the ee machine. This meant that users on all other machines were required to type "ns ee help filename" to bring the file to their screen. If the file was longer than 20 lines, the reader was required to pipe the file through more or have very quick fingers to halt the scrolling text with control keys in order to view all the text.

This frustration will very soon be a thing of the past because ecnnews, a directory of announcements and reference files, will be distributed to all major machines on the network. When ecnnews is in place in May, system users will be able to read these files by calling them up with a "help ecnnews/filename" and read with ease.
