ECN To Test New Gould NP1 Machine (new machine to test)

Bill Simmons

During the 1987 summer ECN is looking forward to receiving a beta test version of Gould Computer Systems' newest computer, the NP1. Gould plans to start regular shipments of the NP1 the end of 1987 and is placing a test version in Electrical Engineering to help locate and analyze software and hardware problem areas. After the machine becomes stable, Gould plans to leave the machine at Purdue for use as a regular ECN machine. If the NP1 performs as expected the Dean of Engineering plans to upgrade existing ECN Gould PN9080 machines, CA, GA, and MG, to NP1 machines during the 1988 summer.

The NP1 test machine configuration includes 2 CPU's, 64 megabytes of main memory (later to be upgraded to 256 megabytes), 1520 megabytes of disk storage, a magnetic tape drive and network interfaces. The machine is expected to have double the overall performance of the existing PN9080 machines and greater yet performance for certain applications due to vector hardware and the extremely large main memory.
