Notes on using Pic to include Qplot or PicSure graphics in a Troff document

Kent De La Croix

Occasionally when using pic to process graphs created with qplot or PicSure, pic will run out of room in one of its internal tables. When this happens pic should print an error message on your terminal saying something like ``pic: out of space in ...'' or ``pic: can't grow ...''. If you get these error messages you can use the command ``limit d u'' to increase your datasize limit to its maximum before running pic to give pic more space to work with. The new limit remains in effect for all subsequently issued commands until you log off, so you only need to use the limit command once per login session. If, when you try to do the ``limit d u'', you recieve the error message ``limit: not found'' you need to first type ``csh'' and then type the command ``limit d u''. Also, if you do this you will need to type ^D twice to get logged out.

By default pic draws graphs at the left margin of the page. Also, no checking is done to see if the graph will fit on the current page, so your graph could be split across two pages. If you are using the MM macro package an easy way to center your graphs and make sure they aren't split across pages is to put them in a static or floating display specifying the center block argument. For example:

                 .DS CB
                 .PS

                 .PE
                 .DE

If you aren't using the MM macros an alternate method of obtaining centered output from pic is described in the pic manual.
