[next article]On the ECN we have some computer systems which do not run Berkeley UNIX, this includes one AT&T 3b20 computer system and several 3b2s. In the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering buildings, these machines are networked together with 3bnet. Although this network does not support remote logins or access to other ECN machines, it is well suited for transferring files from one machine to another.
The 3b2 is a PC sized machine with 30 Mbytes of hard disk storage and 2 Mbytes of memory running UNIX System V. Some of our 3b2s have been upgraded to have floating point hardware. The 3b20 is a ~1 Mips (million instruction per second) class machine with 1200 Mbytes of hard disk storage and 12 Mbytes of memory. This machine also runs UNIX System V
In addition to the AT&T equipment we also have two Data General systems. One system, a MV10000 is in the Mechanical Engineering building, while the other, a MV8000 is in the Electrical Engineering building. Both Data General machines run their own version of UNIX called DG/UX. This version of UNIX is System V and Berkeley compatible and supports TCP/IP networking which allows remote logins and file transfers from other ECN machines.
The MV10000 is a 1+ Mips class machine with 900 Mbytes of hard disk storage and 16 Mbytes of memory. The MV8000 is a little slower than the MV10000 with a 300 Mbyte hard disk and 4 Mbytes of memory. These systems are connected to the Engineering Computer Network and are know as "md" and "ej".
If you have an interest or an application which needs to run in a System V environment, please contact your site specialist or Ingo Cyliax at 49-43473 or "mail cyliax" to arrange an account on one of these systems.
