Information Systems Network at ECN

Ingo Cyliax

Information Systems Network (ISN) capability has been added this past Summer to the Engineering Computer Network, via the EA and MA machines, through a fiber-optics cable connection. This provides the ECN with a maximum of 64 multiplexed ports on each machine, which can be configured as incoming and outgoing lines.

The ISN allows users to connect to a variety of systems on campus. Some of the systems available on the ISN are:

To find out more about the ISN and host connections, type "help" for information and "da" for a host table at the "Dial:" prompt

There are several methods of accessing the ISN. The most convenient way to access ISN is to use tip from any ECN host except Sun workstations. If you are using a Sun, you will need to first connect to a Vax or Gould host before using tip. A second method is to use one of the 16 ISN dialup lines at PUCC. The dialup lines can be reached at 494-9400 using 0-300, 1200 or 2400 baud. After connecting to the modem, you will have to type a carriage return to get the "Dial:" prompt.

In addition to the first two methods, the ISN can also be accessed from the SDS, just type "isn" to the familiar "Port Type" prompt. Since you can reach the ISN from the SDS, you can use the normal PUCC dialup lines at 494-1900, these lines only support 0-300 and 1200 baud. Presently only faculty, staff and graduate students can access the ISN using tip, while anyone can access the ISN using either of the other two methods.

When connecting to EA or MA from the ISN, you will get an abbreviated login prompt. If you have an account on either of these machines, you can login in directly, otherwise you can use terminal to reach your home machine. The default terminal type when coming from the ISN is set to "unknown". If you plan to use vi or other tools that need to know you terminal type, you will need to set your terminal type. This can be done in one of the following ways:

If you use sh (usually a $ prompt) you would type:

        TERM = terminaltype; export TERM

If you use csh (usually a % prompt) you would type:

        set term=terminaltype
