Local Domain Names Shortened

Marian Hensler

New updates to the name server under Berkeley Internet Name Domain (BIND) version 4.7 have made it possible to drop the "purdue.edu" from local domain names when using the rlogin, rcp, finger, and telnet programs. For the average user, this means that you can reduce the domain name almost in half because the name server will tack on the end of the local domain name for you when interacting with PUCC and CS machines.

For more information about BIND and how it works, get a copy of ECN #150 How Domain Naming Works from your site specialist.

As an example, previously you would key in:

   $rlogin i.cc.purdue.edu

Now all you need type is:

   $rlogin i.cc

NOTE: Currently this shortened domain name can NOT be used with mail.
