Ode to the Unsung Clerical

Ralph McCallister
Tho the halls of ivy are lined
               with faculty, staff, graduates
under and above who finally gets
the job done these are the unsung

And when they fly from here to there
a place to stay and back again
               with papers flying everywhere
who gets the job done these are the unsung

Oh my is it DOS, Mac, or the UNIX
today where are the files where
are the tools and which printer should
you use whatever its name who gets
the job done these are the unsung

Who answers the phone and passes it
on then makes the call back and all
tried with a smile then drops everything
at the wish of a whim who gets the job
               done these are the unsung

I pick up the phone and hear in the
halls my troff nroffed and the printers
are down they had a month but wrote it
today which is when it is due who gets
the job done these are the unsung

And who makes the appointments and
sees they're not late and who calms
each visitor and makes the excuses
why you're not there and takes the
brunt of the bear who gets the job
               done these are the unsung

This is my song to those I refer
you all know who you are we all
               have our pressures and sometimes
forget that if it wasn't for YOU
we all be in a mess for who gets
the job done, why YOU who are strong
