Our AT&T Agreement

In recent months several persons have inquired concerning the American Telephone and Telegraph (AT&T) license agreement under which ECN computing systems are operated. Questions have centered around "usage" and "transporting of software." Because of such questions, a review of the basic guidelines in these areas are summarized below. These guidelines are derived from the license agreement between Purdue University and AT&T. Copies of the agreement are available from Mary Burwell at 43356.

USAGE: The ECN machines may be used for instructional, research and administrative purposes only. Furthermore, the agreement does not permit uses for personal gain or uses which place a third party in a position of commercial advantage. Administrative uses include for example, storage of student information, processing of official University documents, and computation of student grades. Uses for personal gain is generally interpreted to include any use for which the user receives payment other than a University salary. An example of third party commercial gain would be to allow a commercial enterprise access while denying competing enterprises similar access. (One ECN machine, PB, is licensed with AT&T for commercial use, and is not restricted as described in this paragraph.)

TRANSPORT OF SOFTWARE: The license agreement binds each and every user to respect the proprietary nature of the UNIX software. Purdue students and staff may have access to all AT&T licensed UNIX software, but may not transport any part of the software to a facility not having an appropriate license agreement. Any software or data created on ECN systems, however, may be distributed at the discretion of its authors.

Please don't hesitate to contact your ECN Site Specialist or Bill Simmons (43651) if you have questions.
