X Window system updates
New X Programs
Since the May issue of the newsletter, we have installed some
more tools for the X Window System. They are described briefly
below; see the manual for more information (type man program-name
to see the manual page).
- xps...A version of xpr (which prints X screen dumps) for
laser writers. It seems to work, but it is sloooow.
- menuwm...A version of the uwm window manager which uses
the XMenu (3) menu library. The menus are implemented
as deck-of-cards stacking menus instead of the ``pull-
right'' menus used by uwm.
- xbgsun...A program to set the background of your screen.
This program reads a Sun raster file and changes the
grey background of your screen to that raster. This
lets you have cartoons, pictures, and so on as your
background. We have several raster images, but they
have not been installed on all machines. If there is
enough interest (contact your site specialist) we may
distribute them around.
- xman...A program for perusing manual pages. This program
is sort of like a mouse-based version of the ECN help
program. Please note that this is a Beta-test copy of
this software, there may be bugs. If you discover any,
please send them to me (login ``davy'') and I will make
sure they are forwarded back to the author.
- xmore...A mouse-based file paginator. This program uses
scroll bars, etc. to page through files with the mouse.
As with xman, this program is in Beta-test and may have
bugs. Please report them to me.
- xpostit...A few bug fixes have been made to xpostit;
most of them are not noticeable. Notes are now saved
when they're moved however, so you can't lose the note
location even if the machine crashes.
- xproof...A troff previewer. This previewer is much more
robust than xtp, which should no longer be used. It's
still not as robust as suntroff, however.
X V11 Beta Received
Version 11 of the X Window System was released to beta-test sites
on July 1st. Unfortunately, the Sun version of the X server had
several problems and has been recalled. We expect to receive a
new version very soon. The scheduled release date for Version 11
is September 15th.
X Documentation Available
The long-awaited X manual has been printed and is available in
the Armory. This manual includes the manual pages for most of
the X programs (everything installed before about mid-June). It
also includes "Xlib - C Language Interface", the manual which
describes how to write X programs, and several other documents
for programmers. The cost of the manual is $6.80
Your site specialist should now have a short paper intended for
beginners on how to start using X. This document is free for the
asking, contact your site specialist. For those of you who
basically know what you're doing and simply need to see some
sample set-up files, I have a few copies of a document which
explains my files in my office. Stop by room 14 of the
Electrical Engineering building to pick one up.
