[previous article] [next article]Kevin Hurley, formerly a PUCC assistant shift supervisor, has joined the ECN staff as a operations coordinator. In his new position, Kevin is responsible for coordinating backup procedures system-wide for all of the ECN machines. The 60+ hours that are spent weekly creating "dump" tapes make it possible for site specialists to retrieve lost user files and recover system losses caused by disk failures or other catastrophes.
The operations coordinator also handles tape requests for the Electrical Engineering Department. Faculty and students contact Kevin when they wish a personal copy of their files. The reasons for requesting tapes vary. Graduation is the most common reason students have for requesting a tape. After working here so long and hard, they want a copy of their work to take with them into the real world. Faculty members frequently need tapes to send to colleagues or conferences or to take with them on sabbatical leave. Kevin is also the person to contact when a user has a tape containing software they would like loaded on the system.
Another major area of responsibility is the administration of computer accounts on EE machines. Kevin's new office is room EE 14, phone number 49-43562, and his login is "kevin".
