Machine Usage

Curt Freeland

How heavy is the work load on the computer systems within the Engineering Computer Network? The table below shows the number of logins handled per machine in a one week period near the end of the Fall semester. The amount of computing resulting from these logins would, of course, vary because some users would simply log in, check their mail and log off, while others would crunch a sizable homework assignment or research project.

A pat on the back goes to the ECN maintenance personnel (DSM) for keeping the system machines up for a total of 3,233* hours out of the 3,260* possible hours covered by this table. In fact, 20 of the 27 hours of down time were for four scheduled PMs (preventive maintenance). DSM also maintains an additional 130 Sun workstations sprinkled throughout the network.
