[previous article] [next article]As you may already know, we are in the process of upgrading our text processing software from DWB release 1.0 to DWB release 2.0. The DWB 2.0 version of nroff, troff and the MM macro package have already been installed on the ECN VAX, Gould 9080, and Sun-3 machines. The remaining pieces of DWB 2.0 (eqn, tbl, and pic preprocessors as well as the new grap preprocessor for drawing graphs) will be installed over the summer as the outstanding problems in these programs are fixed. Anyone wishing to assist in the testing of the DWB 2.0 programs can access them by prepending "/usr/dwb/2/" to the normal DWB commands. For example, the commands:
mmt. -Ti300 -t -e file
pic -Tpsc file | eqn -Tpsc | troff -Tpsc
would become:
/usr/dwb/2/mmt. -Ti300 -t -e file
/usr/dwb/2/pic -Tpsc file |
/usr/dwb/2/eqn -Tpsc |
/usr/dwb/2/troff -Tpsc
Please report any problems you have with the DWB 2.0 programs to your site specialist, especially things which work fine in DWB 1.0 but behave differently when using DWB 2.0.
As you will note from other articles in this newsletter, ECN will be getting two new types of computers over the summer, Gould NP- 1s and Sun-4s. In order to provide the DWB text processing facilities as soon as possible on these new machines, we will be installing DWB 2.0 as the default text processing system on the new machines as they arrive. This means that the output you get when running your text on a Sun-4 or a Gould NP-1 may differ from what you get when running it on one of the other ECN machines. If this does happen please report the problem to your site specialist as this will assist in our debugging of the DWB 2.0 programs.
We do hope to have all ECN machines converted over to DWB 2.0 by the start of the Fall semester so that any differences will have disappeared.
