ECN Public: A Public Macintosh File Server

Dwight D. McKay

The Engineering Computer Network is now providing a collection of Macintosh software by way of a publicly accessible AppleShare file server. The file server is hosted on an ECN Sun file server and is available to any Macintosh which is connected to the ECN network via a Kinetics box and has a copy of AppleShare installed.

As you may already know, AppleShare is Apple Computer's file service product. It requires two halves, a ``client'' half which is installed in your Mac and a ``server'' half. The ``server'' can either be another Mac or a UNIX machine running Columbia University's AppleShare File Server for UNIX (AUFS).

To connect to the ECN Public file server from your Mac, simply select the ``chooser'' from the Apple menu. Click once on the ``AppleShare'' icon, choose the ``ECN Public'' file server from the list and connect to it as ``Guest''. After you exit ``chooser'' you will notice a new icon on your Mac desktop which looks like a little daemon with a file folder. This is the AUFS icon. Click on it to open the volume and view the files inside. All the files on an AppleShare server volume act like files on Macintosh disks. You can launch or make a copy of any of these files just as you would files on local floppy or hard disks.

The files on the server at the moment include:

More files are added every few weeks.

If you do not have AppleShare on your Macintosh you have two alternatives. First, check the AppleTalk network your Mac is connected to. AppleShare is licensed per ``workgroup'' and you should be able to have a copy installed on your Mac by the Mac coordinator in your area. Second if no one in your area has AppleShare, it can be purchased from Apple Computer.

If you have questions or suggestions of files to be placed on the ECN Public file server, drop me a line or give me a call. I can be reached by sending mail from any ECN UNIX machine to ``mckay'' or by calling me at 43561.
