Using the ECN Public File Server
J. Mike "shareware" Moya
While clicking around the zones and Aufs file servers on your
Macintosh (like we all do), you might have seen the server called
"ECN Public". Public...hmmmmm, you might have wondered. Well,
that file server is exactly what it says it is...Public. It
contains applications and documents of the pseudo-public-domain
nature.
Anybody with a Mac on the Engineering Mac Network can copy any of
the files on this server. It's easy.
- Place your mouse on the "main" apple menu (upper left
hand corner) and select the item called "chooser". A window
will be created on your screen called the chooser.
- Look for the zone called "Twilight" inside the "AppleTalk
Zones" subwindow on the bottom, left-hand side of the
chooser. Click your mouse (select) arrow on "Twilight".
- Click your mouse on the AppleShare icon in the upper
left-hand side of the chooser (appleshare is standard
software on system 6.02...available on ECN Public!).
- Look at the Aufs file servers that appear in the upper
right hand corner. Double click the one called "ECN Public".
- You will get a new window (AppleShare) asking you to log
into the server. You don't want to do that, but you do want
to connect. So click your mouse on the "Guest" circle and
then the OK button.
- You will be asked to select a volume, the only one being
"ECN Mac Files" (unless you have other volumes set up). You
can either double click that volume name or click the "Okay"
button and you are done.
- Get rid of the appleshare and chooser window (click the
upper, left hand box) and you will notice an icon on the
right side of your Macintosh screen called "ECN Mac Files".
- Double click the "ECN Mac Files" icon with your mouse.
This will open a window showing all that is available. To
copy, just drag it over to your disk.

server (login: moyman@degree). Make sure you also read the
