Getting Help At ECN

That difficult proposal that you have been working on for the past three years is starting to come together. You might make that deadline yet. Just a few more of these graphs to make... Hey, that graph doesn't look right! Wait a minute ! This data is wrong. Something is broken. Help!

Not all problems are that critical, but they all deserve answers. There are a number of places that answers could come from, some may even be closer than you think.

On-line help and Manual Pages:

The online help system can provide access to the manual pages for all the commands on the system; type: "help command". The manual pages, most often referred to as `man pages', provide the syntax and options for each command, as well as a description of the options. Help also provides access to other sources of information, such as, locally written documents and the ECN No- Name Newsletter (back issues too!). The Newsletters are full of "how-to" articles that describe the commonly misunderstood functions with examples and explanations of how they really work. To read newsletter articles, type: "help ecnnews" and pick "NEWSLETTERS".

Site Consultants and Site Specialists:

Most Engineering Departments have consultants, who are available to answer questions. While the consultants aren't available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, they are available for a good bit of time each day. The hours vary by department, so please check the terminal room for the consultant's hours.

Each Department also has a "site specialist." The site specialist is the ECN person who is responsible for day to day operations at that site. They are quite knowledgeable about UNIX and its utilities and can provide solutions for your computer anguishes. The site specialists can be contacted by mail, by mailing to "site", which will forward the mail to the correct site specialist for that machine. Mail is the preferred way of contact, but should you need to contact a site specialist in person, they are:

ECN Hotline (4UNIX):

During the Spring 1990 semester, the ECN will be offering an experimental service, the ECN hotline. The ECN hotline does not replace the sources of help that have been outlined earlier in this article. The Hotline is planned as a last resort. If you have a problem and can't find a solution by looking in the manual and talking to your site specialist, then the Hotline is for you.

The ECN hotline can be reached via the telephone at `4UNIX' (48649). The hotline operates between the hours of 12:30 pm and 4:20 pm, Monday through Friday.
