Purdue University Library Catalogs: A Guide to Login and Logoff From the ECN

Charlotte A. Erdmann

Are you wondering where to start finding information in your subject area? This simple guide helps you get your foot in the door of Purdue University's libraries.

Library catalogs which serve the needs of engineering students, staff, and faculty are available on two unique computer systems. The Engineering Information System (EIS) contains records of the Engineering Library only while The Online Resource (THOR) is the online catalog for the entire University library system.

The Engineering Information System, containing records of nearly all of the books in the Engineering Library together with the table of contents for those added since 1970, continues to provide the best subject access to these materials. In addition, EIS contains databases on reserve books, reference books, technical report series, and conferences.

THOR is an online database of bibliographic, call number, and location for books, journals, and other materials in the Purdue University Libraries. Most of the books contained in the online database have been purchased since 1975. It does not contain tables of contents for the Engineering Library's books. THOR lists separate databases for the main collection, called BOOK, and the film library's collection, called FILM.

Printed documentation for both computer systems is available at the Engineering Library. Please ask for assistance at the Reference/Information Desk.

Terminals are available for both systems in the Engineering Library. Both EIS and THOR can also be accessed from the Engineering Computer Network.

This short article is designed to help users login and logoff the Purdue University's online library catalogs as well as illustrate a few basic features.

This article does not address the needs of users of other networks at Purdue or users who dial-up from home directly to the THOR computer. Specific instructions are available at the Engineering Library Information Desk.

LOGIN INSTRUCTION FOR EIS FROM ECN

You should know your terminal type before logging in to EIS. If you do not have the terminal type correctly identified, the EIS main screen will not be drawn. Those supported include: adm3a, adm5, vt100, vt52. For other terminal types, contact your ECN site specialist. Setup your terminal type in your .profile for Bourne shell ($) or .login for C shell (%). This is a sample setup for adm3a.

Bourne shell($) users edit .profile as follows:

           TERM=adm3a
           export TERM

C shell(%) users edit .login as follows:

           set term = adm3a

HELPFUL HINTS

This is a cursor-addressable system.

Use to move the cursor up
Use to move the cursor down
Special keys are:

TO ACCESS EIS

  1. Login to your ECN account.
  2. ECN users type: eis
        Dial-up users should type: /usr/custom/eis

LOGIN/LOGOFF INSTRUCTIONS FOR THOR FROM ECN

Two important items that you should know before logging into the THOR system are the terminal type and command needed for .

Setup your terminal type in your .profile for Bourne shell or .login for C shell. Those supported include: adm3a, adm5, and vt100.

The author of these instructions strongly recommends using the correct for your terminal type. Use of for an adm5 will cause 160 parts to be dumped into a file called core in your home directory.

Note: for the terminal types listed below:
              adm3a ctrl z
              adm5 esc ctrl z
              vt100 ctrl z
For other terminal types, contact the Library Systems Dept.
(494-2857) or your ECN site specialist. Here is a sample
    setup for adm3a.

++ Bourne shell($) users edit .profile as follows:
            TERM=adm3a
            export TERM

++ C shell(%) users edit .login as follows:
            set term = adm3a
