[previous article] [next article]Numbering your references within MM is very easy. With a very little work, you can create a document including references that are simple to update and the automatic numbering self adjusts as you add or delete material.
To number a reference, you need to include the following inside your document:
Some quote or other text to be referenced.\*(Rf
.RS
Book or source (actual reference)
.RF
Other text in paper...
.RP
Increment current reference number
and print as a super script.
_________________________________
.RS Start reference text
_________________________________
.RF Finish reference text (end)
_________________________________
.RP Reference Page generated.
Prints all previous references.

It is a common occurrence within a document that a reference is used several times. When this is done, you can assign a variable to a reference and then use that variable to recall the original reference number. This is done by placing the variable "name" (1 or 2 letters) directly after the original .RS command, such as ".RS rA". Any one or two letter combination may be used to NAME the variable ; however, using a lower-case letter follow by an upper-case letter avoids conflicting with existing number registers used by the macro packages. MM will number your duplicate references the same as the original whenever you call the reference variable.
If you are writing a definitive paper on how to train butterflies to fly around potted plants and use quotes from selected books, your troff code to be used with MM macros might appear as shown in the example in the next column.
Further information is available in the DWB Reference Manual, ECN #335 in section 5.7 of the mm: TECHNICAL DISCUSSION.
