[previous article] [next article]In his continuing efforts to enhance Engineering's computing capabilities, Dean Henry T. Yang has announced a plan in which his office will provide majority cost share funding for new workstations and personal computers. This initiative is focused on enhancing the research computing environment and is therefore directed at the needs of tenure track research faculty. This plan recommends Sun SPARCstation 1 systems (diskless, 8Mb, 19" monochrome display) and Apple Macintosh IIci systems (2Mb, 40Mb hard disk, color monitor); although, flexibility for other systems is also provided. Workstations will cost approximately $5000 each.
The Dean's initiative also provides for purchase of workstation file servers and upgrades for existing workstations and file servers. While not all Schools have finalized their purchase plans, the following is an estimate of overall Engineering hardware upgrade plans.
80 Sun workstations
82 Macintosh workstations
62 Memory upgrades for existing workstations
5 Upgrades for existing file servers
2 Sun file servers
Provisions have also been made for software purchases, but specifics are not currently available.
