PUCC Accounts

Christopher M. Songer

While the ECN has many useful computer facilities, there may come a time when one needs an account with another of Purdue's computer departments -- PUCC (Purdue University Computing Center). PUCC is responsible for supplying the University's non- engineering computing needs and has several resources available which are not available on the ECN. PUCC has available a Cyber 205, a CDC 6000 and an IBM 3090 with Vector Processor capabilities as well as a large range of other machines.

PUCC accounts required for classes are automatically supplied by the professor teaching the course. However if the account is for research or another purpose, the account request requires a 0006 (Said triple 'O' six) form available from the PUCC business office in the Math Science Building or in the business offices of the various schools. The form requires the signature of both a professor and the head of the department and allocates a certain amount of funds for the account.

Computing management at PUCC is a bit different from what you may to familiar with at the ECN. One of the first differences you may notice is the lack of career accounts. A career account is an account kept by a student over the course of his career at Purdue. While these are common at the ECN, PUCC does not presently supply them but will within the coming year. Another difference with a PUCC computing account is the method of having charges applied against an account based on the amount of CPU time used and in some cases the amount of time connected to the machine. Additionally there are charges for the use of various PUCC equipment, such as printers and tape backup. For example, printouts on one ply paper cost 1.6 cents per page and attach time to a VAX 11/780 costs $1 per hour. A PUCC account is created with a balance and a account that is used wisely will have no problem as these usage charges are credited against the user's account.

Caroline Prather is in charge of PUCC accounts and is available at the PUCC business office to answer questions which cannot be answered by one's school business office.
