Using Macintosh E-mail

Mike "The Postman" Moya

Many Macintosh users don't realize they no longer have to log into their account (MacIP, NCSA Telnet... terminal emulation) just to read or send electronic mail. There is a much better way. There's a Macintosh application called Eudora that has the capability (with minimal setup) to download your mail directly (and automatically in the background) to your Macintosh. It is recommended for those who have a hard drive and use MultiFinder (although neither is needed).

The only requirement to use Eudora is that you must have MacTCP installed on your Macintosh. MacTCP and instructions to install MacTCP are in the "MacTCP" folder in the "Communication" folder on the ECN Public file server. Don't be scared by the "install" word; it is extremely easy to install. If you don't know how to use the ECN Public file server, please contact your site specialist. To get the Eudora software for your use, copy over the "Eudora" folder inside the "Communication" folder on the ECN Public file server to your hard disk.

Inside the "Eudora" folder you will find a document called "Getting started...". It's a small document that details how to set up Eudora in the ECN environment; it's very easy to follow. Please go through it before you seek help. Once you use Eudora you will wonder how you got along without it. Among its features are:

all with the Macintosh point and click user interface!

The current version of Eudora is 1.1. As you read this article, there is a new version 1.2 with a truckload of new features that is being tested. When this version is released (It may be by the time you read this), I will hold a class to go over the use of the new Eudora features. If you wish to be contacted for this class, please send mail to "info-mac" stating that.
