Gremlin No Longer Supported

Kent De La Croix & Kathleen Stone

Gremlin, an interactive graphics editor for the SUN Workstation, is no longer compatible with SunOS 4.1.1. To explain further, gremlin makes calls to undocumented suntools routines. These routines are no longer part of the suntools library with SunOS 4.1.1. This prevents the creation of a SunOS 4.1.1 version of gremlin. However, a pursuit of a SunOS 4.1.1 compatible version is in progress, but the prospects are grim.

Because of the bleak situation for gremlin, it is advisable to move your work to some other drawing package, perhaps SunDraw and/or SunPaint. However, if you are completing a project on gremlin, you can access the SunOS 4.0.3 version of gremlin. This version seems to work under SunOS 4.1.1 and is available in "usr/ecn/gremln". It is executable by typing "gremln" (note spelling).

For future reference, please do not rely on "gremln". It is probable that "gremln" will stop functioning after the next SunOS upgrade. The upgrade is tentatively planned for Spring/Summer of 1992.
