New Software For ECN

Bill Simmons

The Dean of Engineering and the Schools of Engineering have jointly provided funds to purchase new software for the ECN Sun and Gould machines. The software has been ordered and is expected to arrive and be installed during the Fall Semester. Some of the software will be available on an unlimitied Engineering site wide basis. Other software has an upper limit on the number of concurrent users, but allows access from any station of the relevant architecture. This is referred to as a floating license. A brief description of the software and respective licenses is given below.

MAPLE provides symbolic and numeric computation, mathematical programming, and mathematical visualization. Over 2000 functions are available for the areas of general mathematics, combinatorics, differential forms, projective geometry, Grobner bases, group theory, linear algebra, linear optimization, number theory, orthogonal polynomials, power series, statistics and others. Many agree Maple's symbolic capabilities perform better than those of Mathematica, a similar software package. Maple will be available on an unlimited site wide license for Gould NP1s (CN, EN, GN, MN), as well as being licensed with 25 floating units for Sun 3 stations and 36 floating units for Sun 4 stations.

Pro-Matlab is an interactive software package providing numerical analysis, matrix computation, signal processing, and graphics. The package includes several software libraries or toolkits including: system identification, control system, spline, robust control, optimization and simulab. The user interface is X- windows and Motif oriented. Pro-Matlab will be available on Sun 3 and Sun 4 stations via 250 floating license units. These floating licenses will be available to Freshman Engineering Sun stations located in ENAD in addition to ECN Sun stations. Pro- Matlab is currently available for ECN Sun stations but is restricted to a small number of concurrent users and certain student laboratories.

Wingz is a high performance general purpose spreadsheet providing a wide range of numeric and graphic presentation facilities. Wingz will be available on ECN Sun stations with both Motif and OpenWindows user interfaces. The ECN license includes 125 floating units across Sun 3 and Sun 4 stations. In addition, PUCC has licensed the Freshman Engineering Sun stations located in ENAD with Wingz with the OpenWindows interface.

Write/Paint/Draw The ECN individual station license SunWrite/SunPaint/SunDraw has been upgraded to a 500 floating unit license which will be available on ECN Sun stations and the Freshman Engineering Sun stations located in ENAD. The license upgrade includes a new software release. The new release is distributed by Island Graphics Inc. and is known as IslandWrite, IslandPaint and IslandDraw. The new release is available with the three interfaces: Motif, OpenWindows (OpenLook) and Suntools (SunView).

Sun VolumePAC is a large set of software licensed on an ECN site wide basis. In the interest of brevity, only titles are provided below. More details are available from ECN Site Specialists.
