Mike's Top Twenty List
Mike "extension" Moya
Listed below are (by type and in alphabetical order) the twenty most useful/neat (in my opinion) items available on the ECN Public file server. To get any of the software below just connect to the ECN Public file server and download it to your own Mac. It's available to anyone on the ECN Mac network.
Applications
- Address Book 3.0.8
- This is a very nice application that keeps all your phone numbers and addresses. In addition, you can purchase a $30.00 piece of hardware (or if you have a modem attached to you Mac) that will dial your phone for you.
- Applicon 2.1
- This is especially nice for you MultiFinder addicts. I love this application because it always shows you what is currently running. It shows tiles on your desktop of what applications are currently running. The tiles look like the application icon (color or B/W),
and you can place them wherever you want on your desktop.
- DTPrinter 1.1
- This lets you set up an icon (looks like a LaserWriter) on your desktop that you can drag documents on top of. The result will be that document getting sent to your selected LaserWriter. The plus is that you don't have to open the documents application to print it.
- Grades 2.0
- This is a very nice application a mathematics professor wrote to keeps track of class grades. It has a multitude of special features.
- Speedometer 3.05
- This application has several benchmarks that you can run on your Mac
to test its performance. You can then swap boards and devices (if you have them) to see the impact on your machines performance.
- Eudora 1.2.2
- This application let's you read, send, reply, forward,
and organize your UNIX e-mail from your Macintosh. You can also send Mac files as well. Very nice.
- CClock 2.1
- This is just a color clock. I listed it because it has a nice alarm system. You can set times for a "reminder" dialog to remind you of an
appointment, class, etc...
- Calculator II 1.05
- This is a better (color) calculator (scientific)
to replace the standard Apple one.
Control Panels (or CDEV's)
- Aurora 2.1.1
- This CP let's you color your Mac. Windows, buttons, dialogs, etc... It's neat.
- BeHierarchic 1.0.5
- This CP gives you hierarchical menus of any folders in your system folder. It can save you a lot of mouse clicking time.
- Cursor Animator 2.0.1
- A very cool CP that let's you substitute color/BW animated cursors for the standard blah Apple ones (like the arrow or watch face). It's also has several left handed cursors for you south-paws.
- DepthGauge 2.5.4
- This displays the current screen depth on one of the main menu corners. It also let's you change the setting with a key-stroke. This could potentially save you time if you are always going between B/W and color or 24-bit color.
- Extensions Manager 1.6
- This allows you to turn off and on Control Panels and Extensions
(without removing them from the System Folder).
Makes it a little easier to manage your system.
- Helium 2.0
- Let's you see the balloon help windows with a key-stroke. This is nice because you don't have to keep "balloon Help" on all the time. It's only a key away if you need it.
- Network Time 1.1.1
- This is great. You can set it up to check a UNIX machine and correct the system clock if it has strayed from the actual time.
- SmartKeys 2.1
- A must for anyone who writes a lot of documentation or papers.
It has several features like character ligatures
or not letting you type two spaces in a row
(many people mistakenly do this after a period)
or, if you accidentally type two capital letters in a row,
it will correct the second capital to a lower case letter.
It also gives you an exception list if you don't want
the features on specific applications.
- SuperClock 3.9.1
- Shows your system clock in the menu bar. Many many additional features.
- Temperament II 2.0
- Removes those nasty temp files (Word, Excel for example) from your system folder automatically.
- SoundMaster 1.7.2
- Let's you assign a sound to just about every system function a Mac does (insert a floppy, eject, shutdown, restart, etc).
- PopChar 2.3
- Shows you the entire character set for the current font
with a keystroke (additional features as well)
Honorable mentions (but still very useful)
- MacIP 4.0.1 (Application)
- A very good terminal emulation application
- XferIt 1.4 (Application)
- A very good FTP application
- TrashMan 3.1.2 (Application)
- A very good Trash can manager for System 7 users
- Colorize 3.0 (Application)

multiple screens).
