WordPerfect 5.1 Is Here

NO NAME NEWSLETTER-- January 1993

Phil Moyer

WordPerfect release 5.1 is now available for use at the Engineering Computer Network!

Availability

WordPerfect 5.1 runs only on Sun4 machines, so users must have an account on a Sun4 in order to use it. WordPerfect, however, supports both character-based terminals and the X windowing system. This means that WordPerfect will run on dumb terminals connected directly or remotely logged in to a Sun4, Xterminals, or the displays connected directly to the running host.

Starting WordPerfect X Interface:

The easiest way to run WordPerfect is to use the X interface; type "xwp" to start it.

To use this version, users must be sitting at a display that is running the X11 windowing system or at least the X server. It can be run on Xterminals, Sun workstations running X11, or Sun 4s running OpenWindows 3.0.

DO NOT USE WORDPERFECT'S X INTERFACE ON A DISPLAY RUNNING OPENWINDOWS 2.0!!!

In other words, if you are running OpenWindows on a Sun3, you should not run the X interface to WordPerfect.

Character Interface:

To start WordPerfect on a character terminal, type "wp".

Users running WordPerfect on terminals need to set the WPTERM51 environment variable before running WordPerfect. The file /usr/ecn/wp.dir/shlib/trs.readme lists all supported terminal types. When looking through this file, users should pick the entry that matches the terminal they are using, then set the environment variable WPTERM51 to the name next to the WPTERM50 entry in this file.

For example, users on a Wyse 50 using csh would type

setenv WPTERM51 wyse50

or users on a Wyse 50 using sh or derivates would type

WPTERM51=wyse50
export WPTERM51

Here is a list of common terminals in use around ECN and other places at Purdue.

Terminal WPTERM51 Setting

DEC VT102 vt102
DEC VT220 vt220
Wyse 50 wyse50
Wyse 60 wy60asc
Wyse 75 wyse75
Wyse 85 wyse85
Wyse 99gt wy99asc
xterm wpxterm

Terminal definitions are not available for the following terminals (so don't bother looking):

ADM3 DEC VT52 Heath 19
ADM3A DEC VT100 Regent 20
ADM3A+ DEC VT101 Regent 20x
ADM5 Zenith Z29

File Conversions

The file conversion program, cvt51, has been provided to allow for certain file format conversions. This program is capable of handling the following file formats:

The cvt51 program can convert from these formats into WordPerfect 5.1 format or vice versa. The syntax for using this command is: cvt51 [] \

The available options are:

o Force overwrite of existing file
h Display help screen
i Use ISO Latin 1 character set instead of ASCII

These are the available conversion codes:

     rft -- IBM DCA Revisable-Form-Text
     fft -- IBM DCA Final-Form-Text
     ndif -- Navy DIF Standard
     wp42 -- WordPerfect 4.2
     wp50 -- WordPerfect 5.0
     wp51 -- WordPerfect 5.1
     asc -- Generic Word Processor
     mm37 -- Multimate Advantage II
     asci -- PC Extended ASCII
     dw40 -- DisplayWrite 4.0
     ws33 -- WordStar 3.3
     wd40 -- Microsoft Word 4.0

In addition to cvt51, there is a program called cvtroff that will convert TROFF or NROFF files to WordPerfect 5.1 format. The syntax for this command is

           cvtroff

The available formats are:

1 - no macros, just primitive codes.
2 - primitive codes with MS macros.
3 - primitive codes with ME macros.

The command "cvtroff -h" will display a help screen.
