ECN Dialup Facilities

NO NAME NEWSLETTER Article, September 1993

Dave Chasey

The Engineering Computer Network currently provides five 2400 baud dialup modem lines for engineering student and staff access to ECN facilities. The suggested modem settings are 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity, or 7 data bits, 1 stop bit, even parity. These modems are available by calling 49-46106.

When the ECN modem answers, press the return key a few times to allow the Annex box to detect the baud rate, data bits, and parity information that your modem is currently using. You will then be greeted with an Annex box prompt, such as annex anxe3 port XX:. From this prompt, you can execute a remote login to the ECN machine of your choice.

To accomplish this, type "rlogin machine name" , where machine name is the name of the machine where you have an account. Once you are logged in to your account, you may proceed with your work.

If the five ECN modems are in use, your call will automatically transfer to a group of 15 modems provided by the School of Electrical Engineering on a space available basis. Some of the other engineering schools within the ECN provide dialup modems for use by their faculty, students and staff; however, restrictions apply and you need to contact your site specialist to see if any are available for your use.

PUCC also provides campus wide dialup access facilities available at 49-62000. Type "help" at the DIAL: prompt for more information.

Your screen might look like the example below if you were to connect to the ECN through your modem.
