Hewlett Packard Workstations Come To ECN

NO NAME NEWSLETTER Article, September 1993

Jeff Sponaugle

This summer marked the arrival of a new fleet of workstations to the Engineering Computer Network. The ECN installed approximately 80 Hewlett Packard workstations this summer and plans to install 20 more over the fall semester. Three schools--Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering- -participated in the Hewlett Packard's Recipient Enhanced Grant Program (REG) with HP to obtain these workstations.

Chemical Engineering's lab of HP's is operational in CHME 111. Currently, use of the CHE Lab is restricted to students enrolled in several chemical engineering classes. Access to the lab will change once class usage is determined.

Electrical Engineering will have two labs of HP workstations: one in MSEE 186 and one in POTR 360. Currently, use of the MSEE lab is restricted to students enrolled in several EE classes, but will probably be open to all EE students next semester when the classes move to the Potter Lab.

Mechanical Engineering has scheduled several classes in their new HP lab, which is located in ME 236. First priority on these workstations is for the students enrolled in these classes. When classes are not in session, the lab is open to all ME students.

The current list of workstations include:

Chemical Engineering:
21 715 Workstations, 50 MHz, 48MB Ram,
1 GB Disk, STD Color 8PL
1 755 Workstation, 100 MHz, 256MG Ram,
6 GB Disk, 48Z STD Color
Mechanical Engineering:
26 715 Workstations, 50 MHZ, 32MB Ram,
1 GB Disk, STD Color 8PL
1 735 Workstation, 100 MHz, 64MB Ram,
          2 GB Disk, 8+8 DBL Buf 2D/3D
Electrical Engineering:
23 715 Workstations, 50 MHz, 32MB Ram,
1 GB Disk, STD Color 8PL
17 715 Workstations, 50 MHz, 64MB Ram,
1 GB Disk, STD Color 8PL
2 715 Workstations, 50 MHz, 64MB Ram,
4 GB Disk, STD Color 8PL
1 735 Workstation, 100 MHz, 80MB Ram,
          2 GB Disk, 8+8 DBL Buf 2D/3D
1 735 Workstation, 100 MHz, 80MB Ram,
  2 GB Disk, 24 DBL Buf CRX24

Total Disk Space: 107GB
Total System Memory: 3928MB
The HP systems run HPUX 9.01 along with the HP VUE environment manager. They support X11R5, and have 8 bit pallete mapped color displays. The HP operating system is NOT BSD-based; this is different than the operation systems on the Goulds and the Suns running SunOS 4.1.x. The differences deal mostly with the names and options of various commands.
