The X Window System is a network-based graphics windowing system for workstations which was developed at MIT. The current version of the X Window System is X11R5. It provides users with the capability to run multiple windows and applications on a graphical display, thus enabling users to be more productive and to use a wider range of applications.
Earlier this year, Sam Kimery wrote an ECN application, XSTART,
which is designed to create X11R5 configuration files (used to
customize the X11 environment) and to provide users with the "X
Session Manager" menu. This menu enables users to customize
their environments without having to completely understand HOW to
configure them. This application is available in the directory
/usr/ecn and can be started by typing "xstart" at the UNIX
prompt.
A new version of XSTART (XSession 1.1) is going to replace the existing one on September 8, 1993. This new version fixes many of the bugs which have been made known to the software staff as well as a few additions which have been made in order to provide more information to the user.
Instructions of how to sign-up for one of the XSTART classes can
be obtained by typing "help ecnnews" and selecting
"ShortCourses". Information pertaining to the new
version will be posted to the newsgroup purdue.ecn.announce.
