In the past ECN has created users home directories in directories named:
/home/(server-name)/
/home/(server-name)2/
/home/(server-name)3/
etc.
There are several problems with this scheme, the most notable
being that trying to "browse" through /home with a program such
as filemgr, ghostview, or even ls can cause a machine to become
unusable for several minutes as it goes around accessing the home
directories on EVERY UNIX file server on the network! In order
to alleviate these problems we are moving to a new naming scheme
which is already being used on newly installed file servers.Under the new scheme home directories will be in directories named:
/home/(server-name)/a/
/home/(server-name)/b/
/home/(server-name)/c/
etc.
and in the case of privately owned disks being used for a special
purpose:
/home/(server-name)/(owners-name)/
/home/(server-name)/(project-name)/
As SUN file servers are converted to Solaris 2.x this summer they
will be modified to use this convention as well. To aid with
this conversion we have created links from the new names to the
old names so that you can start using the new names today! So,
if your home directory is currently /home/zoo3/mylogin then you
can start changing this to /home/zoo/c/mylogin in all your
programs, shell scripts, configuration files (e.g. "rc" files),
etc. that reference your home directory. That way when we update
your server to the new naming scheme all of your programs, shell
scripts, etc. will continue to work without a hitch.Use the following information to determine the new name for your home directory:
