Matlab's Robust Control Toolbox

NO NAME NEWSLETTER Article, January 1994

Richard Nordgren

For those of you familiar with matlab's control system toolbox, you may have noticed the manuals or seen the help screen for the robust control toolbox and wondered "What is this all about?" If this is the case, then you are in luck! On February 22nd there will be an ECN short course offered introducing this toolbox and helping you to get started using it. As a brief introduction to this topic, consider the following.

The word "robust" in 'robust control' connotes the quality of good system performance and stability measures despite the presence of uncertainty, be it environmental or modeling uncertainty. Matlab's robust control toolbox provides an environment for constructing plant models with corresponding uncertainty bounds and performance objectives as well as routines for synthesizing robust controllers using a variety of H-infinity and mu algorithms, that have been widely published in the literature. The latest revision of Matlab (version 4.0) introduces many new features that should be of considerable interest to the graduate level engineering student who may have interests in this area.
