EE has converted six Sun 3/50 and 3/60 workstations into X- terminals running on the server "purcell". These workstations are located in MSEE 189 (the big terminal room) and are available to all EE students. Since the X-terminals run off purcell, they run SPARC binaries and use the Sun4 version of software packages (e.g., Matlab Version 4.1 will run rather than Matlab Version 3.5).
When you log into one of these X-terminals, you are really being logged into the server, purcell. That is why you now have a "real" shell (e.g., /bin/csh) on purcell (in the past it was /bin/false). PLEASE DO NOT rlogin TO PURCELL. Access should only be gained through the X-terminals.
Upon login, it tries to read a file .xsession in your home directory. If you have been using a .xinitrc or .X11startup file, you can link the .xsession to the existing file to keep the X setup you are accustomed to:
enterprise> enterprise> ls -las .xinitrc .xsession 1 -rwxr--r-- 1
sally@662 Nov 10 13:01 .xinitrc* 1 lrwxrwxrwx 1 sally@8 Dec 3
11:02 .xsession -> .xinitrc* ln -s .xinitrc
.xsession
Be sure your .xinitrc/.xsession is executable by you (mode 7xx).
If you have questions about the use of these workstations,
contact one of the consultants in MSEE 189 (login econsult) or
send mail to esite.
Also, EE will be upgrading some of the software on the Mac II's in the lab--to MS Word 5.1 and MS Excel 4.0.
For more information on this model modem and compatible modems, see the PUCC Newsletter (November 1993) or ask your site specialist for a copy of this article.
