LISP Updates

NO NAME NEWSLETTER-- May 1995

William R. Simmons

Users of LISP should be aware of changes on the LISP horizon within the ECN.

Allegro CL 4.2 from Franz Incorporated is available for general usage. The manual ECN #845, Allegro Cl, User Guide 4.2, Volume 1 & 2 is in the Sigesmund Engineering Library and in major terminal rooms. The Allegro CL system consists of an interpreter, an optimizing compiler and a set of functions.

The company Lucid Incorporated, our provider of Lucid Lisp, went out-of-business in August 1994. The company interests were sold to Harlequin Incorporated in December 1994 and Harlequin will be emphasizing its own product LispWorks. These developments led the Engineering faculty who use LISP to make Allegro CL the new ECN standard LISP. The Lucid LISP software continues to function but because updates are not being purchased, it will eventually stop running as the Sun operating systems evolve. To avoid unexpected disruptions for Lucid system users, Lucid LISP users are asked to convert to Allegro CL. The Lucid package has been scheduled to be removed from the Engineering Computer Network on
July 31, 1995 .

If you currently use Lucid Common Lisp, you should make plans for migrating to Allegro CL 4.2 very soon. Users who have critical need for Lucid Common Lisp after July 31, 1995 should contact their site specialist for additional information.
