[previous article] [next article]Lynx is another type of browser, similar to Mosaic and Netscape but without the images. It is for those users running cursor-addressable, character-cell terminals or emulators. Accessing Lynx is very simple. After logging onto an ECN UNIX host, type lynx at the prompt. Make sure that the command is written in lowercase letters.
When you access Lynx, the non-image version of the Purdue Engineering page will appear. The arrow keys will help you move from page to page. The up and down arrows will allow you to move up and down a page. The right arrow moves you to the next page and the left arrow moves you back. Other helpful directions are listed at the bottom of each page.
Let's travel through the first few pages together. From the non-image version of the Purdue Engineering Homepage, use the right arrow key. This will take us to ACADEMIC DISCIPLINES WITHIN ENGINEERING AT PURDUE UNIVERSITY. Let's say we want to view the Electrical & Computer Engineering Homepage. Use the down arrow to move down the list to your selection. Press return and the Electrical Engineering Homepage should appear. Press on the space bar to continue on this page. To go back to the Engineering homepage use the left arrow key.
If you want to visit a different homepage, like the Lafayette Homepage, you will need to type in its URL. In Lynx type g and URL to open: will appear and be highlighted. Then in this location, type the URL http://www.mdn.com/LafOnline/. Press return and the Lafayette Homepage will appear. This can be done to access any homepage, provided you have its URL.
From this point you should be ready to traverse the Web. Type h to read through the Lynx Help Files if you are unsure or have questions. To exit type q.
