[previous article] [next article]You are in front of a computer. You want to surf the net but you do not know where to begin. You've logged into a UNIX workstation and set up your X Windowing system, but what do you do? You have heard that Mosaic is one of the browsers you can use to surf the Internet. But how do you get started? It is very simple. At the window command prompt type Mosaic or Mosaic&. The Mosaic command without the ampersand will prevent you from using that window while operating Mosaic. The ampersand is added to the Mosaic command to inform the operating system to return that session to you. Be sure when you type the command that the M is capitalized and the rest is in lower case letters.
When Mosaic first starts up, the Purdue University Engineering homepage will appear. This is the default behavior as set up by the Engineering Computer Network. This page will appear each time you access Mosaic. In order to connect to other pages from this page use the mouse and bring the cursor to any topic of interest and click with the left button on the mouse. For example if you want information on Mechanical Engineering move the cursor to the Mechanical Engineering icon and click. The Mechanical Engineering Homepage will appear. Connections to other pages are easily accessible by moving the mouse cursor on top of underlined text and clicking. To scroll up or down a page, place the cursor on either the upward pointing or downward pointing triangle on the right hand side of the window and press on the left button of the mouse. Or you can move the cursor to the bar between the triangles and move that up and down a page by pressing on the left button and dragging.
The Engineering Computer Network (ECN) Homepage is accessible by clicking on its icon. Once the ECN homepage opens, you will see a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) button, click here and a listing of topics will appear. For information on Mosaic click on Mosaic Answers and/or HTTPD Answers. The selection of titles offered should provide the information you are looking for.
There is also an NCSA Mosaic manual located on the Internet. To access this, click on the Help option located on the upper right corner of the main menu. When the next page appears, click on Manual and the documentation page for NCSA Mosaic for X will appear. They have an online user's guide that you can browse.
To exit from Mosaic move the cursor to the File option near the upper left corner of the Mosaic frame. A submenu will appear with Exit Program as the last option. Click on Exit Program to quit. Another way to exit from Mosaic is by clicking on the Close Window button located at the bottom of the Mosaic document.
