SunSoft Solaris 2.* for Managers and Administrators

Suzy Pelouch

What goes into writing a new book for UNIX/System V users? In the case of ECN's Curt Freeland, Kent Parkinson, president of the local consulting firm Parkinson and Associates (and a former Agricultural Engineering faculty member), and Dwight McKay, a computer specialist at Biology, it included four different editors, three different picture formats, two word processors, weekly meetings with eight technical editors, and over a year of writing and rewriting. The end result of all this time and effort is SunSoft Solaris 2.* for Managers and Administrators.

Curt says the book is aimed at people with some Unix experience who want to learn the administration difference between Berkley UNIX and System V UNIX. These administrative differences are not apparent to the "average" user, but an administrator needs to be familiar with the similarities and the differences in order to manage the systems.

The authors hope that the book will be used as a reference by administrators and managers. They included many simple UNIX examples to make the text as clear as possible. These examples are what made the book so time consuming according to Curt due to Sun changing the paths to commands and the unveiling of the new version of Solaris which in itself added two months to the writing!

SunSoft Solaris 2.* for Administrators and Managers (published by OnWord Press) can be found at the Siegemund Library in Potter Engineering Center. The book will also be sold by Sun Microsystems through their SunSoft and SunExpress stores. The book's ISBN number is 0-934605-75-0.
