Using OpenWindow Applications Under MWM

Joe Gainey

Many users of X run their systems using OpenWindows. However, for those of you who use the MWM window manager for X you can still make use of those applications that are normally run under OpenWindows.

To accomplish this you must first set the OPENWINHOME and LD_LIBRARY_PATH in your login shell. In Korn shell these variables should be set as follows:

export OPENWINHOME="/usr/openwin"
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH="/usr/openwin/lib"

For other login shells you should consult the man pages on how to set environment variavles. Next you should start X in your usual way (if you are new at using X type xstart). When X starts your screen should look something like this:

Now use your mouse and place it inside the XSession Manager window. Place your cursor overthe Customize item, press and release the left mouse button. Drag down to the Applications Definition and press the left mouse button. A new window will pop up with the title Applications Definition.

OpenWindows Applications are located on ECN machines in the /usr/openwin/bin directory. Decide what applications you would like to add and then move the mouse cursor into the Menu Item box. In this box enter the Name of the application you are adding, this will appear under the Applications item exactly as you type it. Next enter into the Menu Item Command box the command used to start the program. This will usually contain an absolute address for the program location and the program name. For example, to start the calendar program, you would enter /usr/openwin/bin/cm into the box. Next put a description into the Menu Item Description box. This will be used to tell you what the program actually does when executed.

After all of the fields have been entered, move the mouse cursor to the click on the Add\ button by pressing the left mouse button. Finally, when you are finished adding programs to your list, go to the OK button and click on it.

Now that you have entered the programs into the listing you can add them under the Applications menu of the XSession Manager window. To do this use the mouse and click the Customize button once. Drag down to the Applications Menu item, then drag right for the next popup menu. Move the cursor down to the Personal... item and press the left mouse button to add an OpenWindow Application under the Applications menu of the XSession Manager

From here a new window with the title Customize Applications Menu will appear.

You should see your new program items and their descriptions listed here along with any other applications previously installed; however, if you don't see your new applications listed use the scroll bars and scroll down to the bottom of the list.

From here you will add applications under the Applications item of the XSession Manager window. To do this click on the program name you would like to add and then press the apply button. All of your programs will be displayed in the Select to Delete column, to remove programs added by mistake, you can click on the program name. After you are done selecting program items to add, click the Apply button and then the OK button.

To save your changes, when you end your session, you can click on the OK button when it asks you if you would wish to save your settings, or you can click the Customize item in the XSession Manager window and go down to Save Current Settings and click on this. Either of these methods will work. From this point on, every time you run MWM you will be able to go to the Applications item of the XSession Manager window and start the application from there.
