WEBINIT -- Automated Web Page Builder

NO NAME NEWSLETTER -- January 1996

Kyler Laird

WEBINIT, introduced in our last newsletter, is a success story for ECN system users! This ECN tool has made the task of getting a Web structure started a simple and quick process. WEBINIT has helped over a hundred ECN users make their information available on the Web in the month of December.

To run WEBINIT...

  1. You must use an account which is hosted by an ECN Sun machine and be at a UNIX shell prompt.
  2. Type webinit. The tool will run to completion without any more input.

WEBINIT will...

  1. Issue status reports as it constructs your public-web directory and necessary related files.
  2. Within about 5 minutes, you will receive a WEBINIT email message containing the URL to use to access your homepage.

Now you may use your favorite Web browser to access your homepage and the editor of your choice to change to the content of your page.

Problems...

Out of the 100+ WEBINIT installations, only a few problems have been reported. Problems were primarily out-of-date user account information or a host machine did not yet have all the necessary system files installed.

Most of the data WEBINIT uses to create your homepage comes from the finger database. If this database holds incorrect or out-of-date information about you then your homepage will reflect these inaccuracies. To update your personal finger information, use the chfn command and re-run WEBINIT to make the correction.
