NO NAME NEWSLETTER -- May 1996

The TeX package is now available as ECN-supported software. Presently, TeX version 3.1415 is on the Solaris systems in /usr/new/bin. During the summer, TeX will be moved to /usr/opt/bin, which is in the ECN UNIX systems default command search path. TeX version 3.141, currently in /usr/unsup/bin, will be removed.

TeX is a tool for creating high quality text. It is particularly good for displaying mathematics. TeX was originally designed by Donald Knuth in the 1970's. Version 3.1415 is actually only the fourth minor revision of TeX. Knuth specified that the versions of TeX should converge to pi (a little computer humor??) so, if one starts at version 3, 3.1415 is the fourth revision. Most people who use TeX invoke LaTeX, TeX with a macro package.

ECN wishes to thank Mark Senn of Purdue's Statistics Department for providing ECN a copy of the TeX system he maintains for Statistics. He generously installed it for ECN, and is providing his expertise to help Engineering maintain a professionally supported TeX system.

We are in the process of building our collection of LaTeX/TeX documentation. The following books will be available this summer for check out from the reserve section of the Siegesmund Library in the Potter Engineering Center.

Currently available:

A Guide to LaTeX by Kapka and Daly
Coming this summer:
Making TeX Work by Norman Walsh
The TeXbook by Donald Knuth
LaTeX: A Document Preparation System by Leslie Lamport
