"Materials" have been central to the growth, prosperity, security, and quality of life of humans since the beginning of history. New materials and their efficient production provide the basic foundation for our world of modern devices. So, if the creation of new and more resourceful materials is so important to life on our planet, why are the people responsible for making our lives more enjoyable so few and far between?
One reason is that the field of materials engineering is under exposed to the general public and to perspective engineering students. Dr. Gerald L. Liedl, head of the School of Materials Engineering is trying to change all that with the help of the World Wide Web.
Under his guidance a site targeted at high school juniors through college sophomores has begun to evolve. The Career Resource Center for Materials can be found via your favorite web browser at the above URL.
This initial version provides basic information about materials engineering and allows students to direct questions to experts in the field. While still in the developmental stage, the Career Resource Center for Materials is seeing weekly changes. In the future the site will be interactive, asking users who they are and what they want to know.
At this site engineering students and perspective students will be able to:
With the help of the Career Resource Center for Materials, Dr. Liedl will be solving a two-fold problem: informing people about the field of materials engineering and advising them concerning career opportunities.
