NO NAME NEWSLETTER -- September 1996

Kimberly Johnson

Have you been having unexplained lockup problems since upgrading to Microsoft Word V6.0x on your PowerMac? You may need to update your Office 4.2x Update for Power Mac extension. Microsoft has confirmed there is a problem running MS Word on the PowerMacs. The extension version 1.01 prevents PowerMac Office Applications from hanging after you use MS Word for PowerMac or QuickDrawGx.

This extension update can be downloaded directly from Microsoft.

  1. Once you are on Microsoft's Web page, you can locate the file under Information and Technical Resources. Select Extension to Prevent Hanging Power Macs Apps.
  2. Double click on Extension to Prevent Hanging PowerMacs Apps. There will be three items that will be automatically downloaded to your system. The name of the files are mc1164.hqx, mc1164.sea, and a mc1164 folder. You only need to be concerned with the mc1164 folder. Within the mc1164 folder there are three files, ReadMe.Doc, ReadMe, and Office 4.2x Update for PowerMac.
  3. Click and drag the Office 4.2x Update for PowerMac extension to the System Folder.
  4. You will first be prompted "Extensions need to be stored in the extensions folder in order to be available to the Macintosh".
  5. Put Office 4.2x update for PowerMac into the extension folder. Click the OK button.
  6. You will then be immediately prompted A item named Office 4.2x Update for PowerMac already exists in this location. Are you sure you want to replace the newer item with the one you are moving? Click the OK button. When choosing OK, the file will automatically be updated and placed in the extension folder.
  7. Restart your Mac and you are done.

If you are still experiencing problems, please feel free to contact me.

In order to expand the files, it will be necessary to have some type of expansion software, for example Stuffit Expander. Stuffit Expander is free and available on ECN Public.
