Oxford English Dictionary--Web Interface

NO NAME NEWSLETTER -- September 1996

Anthony Forma

The Oxford English Dictionary (second edition), located at "http://oed.purdue.edu/". is now maintained on the web through the efforts of PUCC's PDN. It makes use of the web to reproduce the common phonetic spelling symbols, and contains a complete key to the phonetic alphabet used. It is a full HTML version of the 21,245 page hard copy located in the HSSE library (all 20 volumes, 48 inches of shelf space, weighing 124.8 pounds).

The page offers a simple and a more complex search interface. The simple form consisting of a single field for the desired word and a submission button. The more complex form contains the single word entry field as well as a number of other options. Five different formats can be selected for the return of information and a choice is given between six different search methods. Each of the search methods and one of the return types are also explained in depth, if desired. n This is a large, well cross-referenced dictionary with well designed and documented search interfaces which make it efficient and easy to use.
