Oxford English Dictionary--Web Interface
NO NAME NEWSLETTER -- September 1996

The Oxford English Dictionary (second edition), located at
"http://oed.purdue.edu/".
is now maintained on the web through the efforts of PUCC's PDN.
It makes use of the web to reproduce the common phonetic spelling symbols,
and contains a complete key to the phonetic alphabet used.
It is a full HTML version of the 21,245 page hard copy located in the HSSE
library (all 20 volumes, 48 inches of shelf space, weighing 124.8 pounds).
- 291,588 unique word entries
- 2,425,183 quotes
- 450,198 cross references
The page offers a simple and a more complex search interface.
The simple form consisting of a single field for the desired word
and a submission button.
The more complex form contains the single word entry field as well as
a number of other options.
Five different formats can be selected for the return of information
and a choice is given between six different search methods.
Each of the search methods and one of the return types are also
explained in depth, if desired. n
This is a large, well cross-referenced dictionary
with well designed and documented search interfaces which make it
efficient and easy to use.
