We present for your perusal two scenarios:
Believe it or not, these scenarios are not drawn from fiction. Rather, they are closer to being a daily occurrence here in Electrical and Computer Engineering. Companies often call schools and departments directly in order to find qualified candidates for open positions. The problem in the past has been how to get the information out to the students.
Early (primitive) efforts included posting a hard copy of job notices on a bulletin board in the main hallway of the EE Building. However, the number of notices posted resulted in a density of paper that was almost impossible to wade through. So, a hard-copy notebook duplicating the material on the board was added in the Main Office -- a little more convenient, but still intimidating. Blanket e-mail messages to students enrolled in EE 400 and EE 694 classes managed to get the word out a little more effectively, but resulted in a scattershot, hit-and-miss methodology. Then, the revelation hit: We can put the job listings online!
ECE would be the test case for all of engineering to see if "jobs online"
would actually benefit the students. Kyler Laird and Marian Delp designed
a standard page to input information, and on May 16, a brave crew of
typists including Retha Stockton, Jo Gelfand, and Siddhartha Rao
joined Marian and Kyler in transforming the hard-copy
notebook into an easily accessible, electronic version. Now, anyone with
an ECN account can check the current listings at

When you view the job postings:
Listings are removed after 60 days in order to keep the material fresh and up-to-date. Does it help? We hope so. Is it easy to use? We think so. Are there bugs? You tell us. Log on, check it out, and send your comments and suggestions to webmaster@ecn.purdue.edu.
