Related CII Research Studies and Other Resources

A variety of project management practices complement and support the effective consideration of construction automation in the design phase.  These include such practices as constructability reviews, pre-fabrication, modularization, and partnering.  Provided below is a list of CII research studies and resources along with other related construction industry initiatives that can help benefit designing for construction automation.  Further information about the CII studies and resources can be found on the CII website.

Pre-Project Planning Handbook (CII, SP39-2)

This handbook defines the functions involved in pre-project planning and outlines specific steps.  It focuses on the "how to" of pre-project planning and its sub-processes.

Pre-fabrication, Pre-assembly, Modularization, and Offsite Fabrication (PPMOF): Decision Framework and Tool (CII, IR171-2)

This implementation resource is designed as a decision-support tool.  It consists of a CD and guidebook which facilitate discussions on the use of PPMOF.  Included are a decision timing map, tools for strategic analysis, and suggestions for tactical analysis.  Also included is a spreadsheet-based Strategic Analysis tool.

Constructability Implementation Guide (CII, SP34-1)

This guide presents details on the milestones required to implement constructability, and includes case studies on four real-world projects.  Includes Research Summary 34-2.

Procurement and Materials Management: A Guide to Effective Project Execution (CII, IR7-3)

This guide provides current information for modern materials management.  It includes chapters on planning, purchasing, expediting, QA/QC, transportation, site management, organization of personnel, computers, international projects, commercial projects, small projects, and special techniques.  Also contained are a glossary of over 300 terms and a post-project evaluation questionnaire.

Radio Frequency Identification Tagging: Applications for the Construction Industry (CII, IR151-2)

This resource provides readers with practical information related to RFID technology.  Included are frequently asked questions and answers, lessons learned, and a decision-support process chart to facilitate selecting the type of RFID system to implement.

Partnering Toolkit (CII, IR102-2)

This toolkit aids users in evaluating partnering, selecting a partner, and implementing and maintaining a partnering relationship.  ToolKit software is provided to allow the development of customized processes that are critical to the success of partnering relationships.

Emerging Construction Technologies and the Advanced Construction Technology System (ACTS) (CII, RS15-1)

This research summary describes emerging technologies in the areas of steel and concrete construction, electrical and instrumentation construction, and piping and mechanical construction.

Fully Integrated and Automated TECHnology (FIATECH)

A consortium focused on fast-track development and deployment of technologies to substantially improve how capital projects and facilities are designed, engineered, built and maintained.
