1997 IEEE Workshop on Nonlinear Signal and Image Processing

Web version of Workshop CD-ROM

January 20, 1998 -- This web site contains the electronic files for the workshop CD-ROM, which is now in production. Papers for which there was no electronic file will be scanned by the company producing the CD-ROM and they will appear on the CD-ROM. However, these papers were not scanned for this web site, and so do not appear here.

WELCOME TO NSIP'97

Welcome to the 1997 IEEE/EURASIP Workshop on Nonlinear Signal and Image Processing. The site for our workshop is Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, which is located in the straits of Mackinac between the Upper and Lower Peninsulas of the state of Michigan in the United States. This site was selected by the workshop committee for both its beautiful natural setting and the truly elegant accommodations at Grand Hotel.

NSIP'97 is the third in a biannual series of workshops devoted to nonlinear signal and image processing. The first was organized by Yrjo Neuvo in Tampere Finland in 1993; the second by Ioannis Pitas in Neos Marmaras, Greece in 1995 (NSIP'95). The next workshop in this series will be organized by Enis Cetin and held in 1999 in Antalya, Turkey in 1999 (NSIP'99).

The goal of these workshops is to bring together researchers working in many different areas of nonlinear signal and image processing. This allows common threads of interest in both theory and application to be discovered by people whose papers would otherwise be widely scattered among many different sessions in many different conferences. The resulting exchange of ideas and development of new collaborations and friendships is the most important outcome of the workshop. The elegant Mackinac Bridge, the world's longest suspension bridge, that can be seen from the workshop's hotel is a fitting symbol of the new bridges we hope the workshop will build between all who attend.

For those interested in statistics, 150 papers were submitted to NSIP'97, with 119 papers appearing in the final program. These papers are organized into twenty-two sessions, four of which are invited sessions. Two excellent afternoon plenaries will be by delivered by Thomas Sikora, who will speak about the emerging MPEG-4 standards, and Guillermo Sapira, who will speak about applications of nonlinear partial differential equations in image processing. The main plenary will be delivered during the workshop banquet by Gary Starkweather, the inventor of the laser printer. He will provide unique insights into the future of electronic imaging and our own workplaces.

In the end, though, it will be the attendees of NSIP'97 that make it a success. They will deliver the many interesting presentations, provide the valuable contributions for the workshop proceedings, and create the intellectually exciting atmosphere one hopes for in a workshop. Many thanks to all who attend and make it a memorable workshop.
