Community Profile: Town of Kouts, Indiana

Population Served: 1600

Town in northern Indiana, about 10 miles south of Valparaiso.

Lesson to be learned: Start early on wellhead protection planning. Unforeseen problems can occur that can be time-consuming.

The town of Kouts got an early start on wellhead protection planning. When we first contacted Nathan Howell, the water supply supervisor, in January of 1999, he was already in the process of gathering assistance to manage the municipal well field. The wells are located in an agricultural area. Mr. Howell had contacted the local Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapter to see if they wanted to farm the fields using the Best Management Practices (BMPs) that would ensure safe drinking water for the community. He had found someone to delineate the wellhead protection area and was anxious to form the team and get the remainder of the plan underway.
