Course Description:

CE 683 presents the analysis, design, and constructive aspects of shallow and deep foundations and other typical components of foundations works, such as ground anchors. Quality assurance techniques, site investigation for foundation engineering, foundation repair and underpinning are some special topics also addressed.

Course Objective:

The main objective of CE 683 is to enable students to select the best foundation solution for different types of civil engineering problems. After completing the course students should be able to design deep and shallow foundations and supervise their construction. The course philosophy is to provide the students with the information they need to design foundations at the state of the art. The information is supplied in a systematic way, discussing topics where current knowledge is lacking and research is needed.

Grades:

Grades will be assigned according to the regulations of Purdue University. They will be based on three midterm exams with weights as follows:

lowest grade: 20 %
intermediate grade: 25 %
highest grade: 30 %
assignments: 25 %

Assignment and Handout Policy:

Half credit will be given to any assignment turned in after the day on which it is due. Some handouts distributed in class will be available on the course website. For other handouts, please arrange with a fellow student for a copy.
